by Min Jin Lee
I recently read the book Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. It’s a multigenerational story focusing on the life of a Korean woman, Sunja. Sunja grows up in the period of Japanese occupation in Korea and paints life in the time in great detail. It also talks about the lives of her children and grandchildren as they face the realities of discrimination faced by Koreans in Japanese dominated society. I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved it. It was thoroughly specific in its descriptions so I never had an issue visualizing the events and characters. Although it strikes a very serious tone, I can’t recommend it enough.
